We are excited to invite you back to our OC House Concert on Saturday, October 9th, 2021 at the Bowers Museum. This concert will feature our invited cellist Taeguk Mun, a Prize Winner of XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition (2019) and pianist HyeJin Kim.

Cocktails and light hors d’oeuvres will be served starting 4:00 pm and music will start promptly at 4:30 pm.

TAEGUK MUN

Winner of various competitions, such as Pablo Casals International Cello Competition (2014) and III Andre Navarra International Cello Competition. He was also a prize winner at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition in June 2019.

Born in 1994, Taeguk Mun began playing the cello at the age of four with Young Rim Yang in Korea. After moving to New York in 2007, he attended the Juilliard School Pre-College Division as a full scholarship student of Minhye Clara Kim and received the Bachelor of Music degree at the New England Conservatory as a full scholarship student of Laurence Lesser.

He has been the first prize winner of various competitions, such as 2014 Pablo Casals International Cello Competition, the Third Andre Navarra International Cello Competition, the International Competition for Young People in Oldenburg, Germany, and the Grand Prize winner of the National SungJung Music Competition in Korea. He was also laureate of the 16th International Tchaikovsky Competition, the 2010 Irving M. Klein International String Competition, and the 6th International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians.

Starting with Kumho Prodigy Concert in 2004 and his solo recital at Gyeonggi Arts Center in 2006, Taeguk Mun has been performing throughout, primarily in Korea and the United States. He has collaborated with various orchestras around the world including St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonia, Hungarian Radio Symphony, Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra, and Korean Symphony Orchestra. Mun has been invited to various musical events such as Busan International Music Festival, Young Artist Lunch Concert Series at the Louvre Museum, France, Budapest Spring Festival, Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music, the World Orchestra Festival in Korea, and <Eaktay AHN 110th Anniversary Concert> in Hungary.

Taeguk Mun is sponsored by SungJung Cultural Foundation, Hwangjin Scholarship Committee and was selected as a “G.rium Artist” by SK Chemicals of Korea. He was the artist in residence at the Kumho Art Hall in 2017. Mun also has been awarded the Nanpa Musician’s Award in Korea in 2019 and the first Janos Starker Award in 2016. In 2019, his debut album released from Warner International Classics label.

Mun is currently pursuing the Master of Music degree with Ralph Kirshbaum at the University of Southern California as a full scholarship student.

Taeguk Mun plays on Giovanni Grancino, 1697, Milan, generously on loan by Samsung Cultural Foundation of Korea.

HeyJin Kim

Pianist HyeJin Kim has been described as “passionate, indisputably masterful technique with colorful interpretations” (Der Westen), and is recognized as one of South Korea’s top artist with a comprehensive career as soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and educator. Born in Seoul, HyeJin trained at the prestigious Yewon Arts School and Seoul Arts High School and received numerous awards including the Hong Kong International Piano Competition, DAAD Prize in Germany, Steinway & Sons Advancement Award Competition, and Toronto International Piano Competition. HyeJin was the youngest prize winner of the 55th Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition. HyeJin recently made her Carnegie Hall debut and has performed as soloist with the Korean Chamber Orchestra, Westchester Philharmonic, San Bernardino Symphony and Buffalo Philharmonic where Ms. Kim’s performance “… had the utmost delicacy…. with a terrific flourish. She threw herself into music with a grace and fortitude.” (The Buffalo News)

 

HyeJin has a diverse and colorful concerti repertoire ranging from Bach and Mozart to Rachmaninoff and Gershwin. She has performed and toured internationally with numerous orchestra such as the Russian State Philharmonic, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Hessischer Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Prague Radio Symphony, Budapest Symphony Orchestras, Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic, Gyeong-gi and Dae-jeon Philharmonics, Seoul Art Festival Orchestra, Toronto Sinfonietta, Pilsen and Moravian Philharmonic Orchestras, State Symphony Orchestra of St. Petersburg, Nürnberger Symphoniker and the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Mus-ique and the Colburn Orchestra. She has performed with conductors such as Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Eliahu Inbal, JoAnn Falletta, Carl St. Clair, Valery Polyansky, Christoph Poppen, Achim Fiedler, George Master, Yehuda Gilad, Jiri Malat, Tomáš Hanus, Shi-yeon Sung, Dae Jin Kim, and Su-Yeol Choi, among others.

 

An appreciative recipient of generous support by the Amron-Sutherland Grant for Young Pianists from the Colburn School, HyeJin Kim received her Artist Diploma at the Colburn School and holds her Master of Art in Music and Konzertexamen (highest distinction) from Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler under the guidance of Fabio Bidini.
